Roofing Dumpster Guide:
What Size Dumpster Do I Need for Shingles?

Superior Dumpster Rentals | Serving Southwest Michigan

Replacing a roof creates a lot of debris - and those shingles get heavy quickly. Whether you're a homeowner tackling a roofing project or a contractor looking for a convenient way to handle tear-off debris, choosing the right dumpster size can save you time, money, and extra trips.

At Superior Dumpster Rentals, we provide 10-, 14-, and 20-yard dumpster rentals throughout Southwest Michigan. Here's how to decide which size is right for your roofing project.

How Much Do Roofing Shingles Weigh?

Roofing debris is much heavier than ordinary household junk. Asphalt shingles can add up to thousands of pounds even on an average-sized roof.

The exact weight depends on several factors, including:

·        The square footage of the roof

·        Whether the shingles are architectural or traditional 3-tab shingles

·        How many existing layers are being removed

·        Whether additional materials such as underlayment, flashing, nails, or damaged wood are being discarded

·        Whether the shingles are wet

Because roofing material is so dense, choosing a dumpster isn't just about whether everything will physically fit. Weight matters too.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need for Roofing Shingles?

Superior Dumpster Rentals offers three convenient dumpster sizes.

10-Yard Dumpster

Our 10-yard dumpster is a great option for smaller roofing jobs and other projects that generate relatively small amounts of heavy debris.

It can work well for:

·        Small garages

·        Sheds

·        Porches and additions

·        Small roofing repairs

·        Partial roof tear-offs

Our 10-yard rental includes 1 ton of disposal weight.

14-Yard Dumpster

Need a little more room? Our 14-yard dumpster offers additional capacity without jumping all the way to a large container.

It can work well for:

·        Medium-sized roofing projects

·        Garage roofs

·        Larger additions

·        Roofing projects combined with other renovation debris

Our 14-yard rental includes 1.5 tons of disposal weight.

20-Yard Dumpster

For larger roofing projects, our 20-yard dumpster provides considerably more space.

It's a popular choice for:

·        Larger home renovations

·        Cleanouts

·        Construction projects with significant debris

Our 20-yard rental includes 2 tons of disposal weight.

Because shingles are exceptionally heavy, always talk with us about your roofing project before filling a 20-yard dumpster completely with shingles. Weight limits and disposal requirements can affect how much roofing material should be loaded into a single container.

How Do I Estimate How Many Shingles I'm Removing?

Roofers typically measure roofs in roofing squares. One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof area.

For example, a 2,000-square-foot roof would equal approximately 20 roofing squares before accounting for roof pitch, waste, and other factors.

Knowing approximately how many roofing squares you're tearing off - and how many layers are currently on the roof - can help us recommend the appropriate dumpster.

Don't know your roof size? That's okay. Tell us a little about the house and project, and we'll help you determine which dumpster makes the most sense.

Don't Overload a Roofing Dumpster

One of the biggest mistakes people make with roofing debris is assuming they can fill a dumpster all the way to the top.

With lightweight household junk, volume is often the limiting factor. With shingles, weight may become the limiting factor long before the dumpster is physically full.

An overloaded dumpster can be unsafe or too heavy to legally transport. Always follow the provided fill and weight guidelines.

Can Nails and Roofing Debris Go in the Dumpster?

In many roofing tear-offs, shingles are accompanied by nails, underlayment, flashing and other roofing debris.

Before loading your dumpster, ask us about the specific materials from your project. Disposal requirements can vary depending on the material and facility. Never assume hazardous materials or liquids can be mixed with ordinary construction debris.

Why Rent a Dumpster Instead of Hauling Shingles Yourself?

Roofing debris adds up quickly. Trying to haul shingles yourself can mean repeated trips, fuel expenses, unloading heavy material, and additional time away from the project.

Having a dumpster on-site allows you or your roofing crew to dispose of debris as the roof comes off. When the job is finished, we pick up the container and handle the hauling.
